Character: Shadow

Wow I just got a really cool idea for Stablehand

Ok so I have this character called Shadow (a humanoid hexart) I thought was a cool idea for like five seconds, then kinda gradually lost interest in

And I was just thinking about what else I might fill that character slot with

And I suddenly imagined filling it with the first “sub-MB” who has its own new set of attributes and maybe a few other new “mechanics” that it brings with it which aren’t supposed to be and kinda don’t mesh with existing stuff; essentially this little thing is like a sentient glitch in reality

And I realised that perhaps Shadow could be a character that was supposed to be a character like the others but got like deleted by this thing coming into existence and his storyline/existence could be all glitched up, making him a shadow of a character

Some miscellaneous creatures that didn’t quite work.

Shadow has been a character I’ve been consistently ambivalent about, and I’ve had thoughts of either dropping or revamping him a bunch. Remembering another (throwaway) character I’d created once with a vaguely interesting appearance and the fact I didn’t exactly have an Esteemed character on the main cast I tried to revamp him to be Esteemed, and it looked pretty cool honestly, but after a little while I scrapped that idea, realising that nope, I just wasn’t realising what the main idea of Esteem was before so there actually was one already, and also that this design was a little lacklustre in being too “standardly awesome”. So I’m back to square one with him, but at least this misstep made me appreciate him a bit more.

A couple of “traditional” medieval creatures, which I’m not sure if I’ll use or not. One was an “ermine” with a heraldic “ermine” pattern, the other was a very literal take on a leucrota (from Pliny the Elder’s description).

Leijonœrns. Or, serious attempts at them that didn’t quite work. Originally I wanted them to look a lot like hexarts (see: sideways one, stuff at the top), but more recently (many months after I’d drawn the sideways one) I decided it would be more interesting to give them shoulder arms and ground wings and make them visually different from hexarts, and do similar with the other six-limbed creatures. I’m probably going to stick with that, though it’s the only thing I solidly liked about these.

Yeah, it seems like I’m going to drop Pantéras to NPC status or something, in favour of bringing back Shadow and adding Ssiv. He miiiiiight still get his same storyline actually, but just be kind of a small sidestory, with not much elaboration compared to the main characters’ storylines.

That way the main characters seem to come out to 12 with 3 groups of 4, which makes my synaesthetic brain a lot happier. :p

…Wait, except for Knight Cat. Stupid Knight Cat. :p

Then again I never was really going to consider him a main character. But then again again, I’m also not sure how counting Hughes or Red in this and not counting him makes sense because he’s probably more autonomous than they are to tell the truth.

Erg. Stupid Knight Cat. :p

TDNMB: the highlights, 4/16~5/2

Okay, now I’ve finally gotten all my blogs in order and decided what I’ll do.

TDNMB and my Stablehand/Tyrian tags on tumblr will be for all my WIPs I feel like posting, and separate posts on this blog will be for the finished stuff. However, since I seem to be producing a lot more WIPs than finished stuff lately, I’m also going to post compilation posts here of the rougher stuff from my tumblr periodically. This is the first of those posts, mostly covering 4/16~5/2.

A human-like hexart for Stablehand in progress.

You might remember him from the diagram. His name is Shadow!

Yup, I used Blender vertex paint to try to experiment with some colours for him. It’s okay for that, at least. We’ll see if it’s worth anything as a guide for painting real textures later.

(Sidenote: at the moment, this guy is oddly reminding me of the dragons in Spyro the Dragon thanks to the way the head “beard” and wing shape look right now, though I wasn’t trying at all to make him look like that.)
