But in a real nutshell (seriously, please look at that tag) Stablehand is a visual gamebook and libre universe (the Sixteen Hues universe). It has a “retrolark” aesthetic I made up (retrolark:1980-1990::steampunk:1800-1900) and a system of mechanics revolving around “cirque” (transformative magic kinda) and “attributes”. It also features a lot of cladistics-based (and otherwise) fantasy creatures.
Today I had a dream that involved elevators with open doors that could go places elevators don’t normally go. I nearly forgot it when I woke up so I don’t remember a lot of it, sadly.
At first I was just getting on normal elevators that only went up one or two floors though a little bit fast. Then there was one that shot up some 500 floors really fast, through this building that was still building itself before your eyes to catch up to the elevator except the elevator was going way too fast so it just went up into the sky.
For the longest time I never really “got” fins on dragons or that thing where dragons have a million bones in their wings but then today I saw an illustration for D&D Pathfinder where a dragon was drawn with these funky wings that were membranous but scalloped (?) with a bunch of little bones going through them like the rachis running down flight feathers and honestly
By total accident it made me think because the only place I’d seen that many bones in a limb was in fish (particularly ray-finned fish aka Actinopterygians)
Maybe fin dragons would be the closest related tetrapods to ray-finned fish.
Me: It occurs to me while updating my charahub that I put both that Kate tended to be really bullshit and Ssivyin was the best at putting aside other people’s bullshit
Me: Unstoppable force vs immovable object
Me: It’d actually be a great dynamic
Me: Ssivyin just kinda incidentally gets their day interrupted by Kate doing something bullshit and just kinda decides, ok, you are going down. Ssiassi, you have full permission to go do whatever you want
Me: Not least because I don’t imagine Kate would believe fae are real so if she saw one indisputably next to Ssivyin she’d probably flip her shit
Sometimes I’ve tried to briefly imagine what a Stablehand/16hues-styled tabletop roleplaying system would be like
I’ve never had any immediate ideas for actually building one but it’s kinda occurring to me that like,,,, if I could build it I could program it,,,,,,,
Maybe in a whole “Format B” type thing but way more likely, just as a calculator page you could download that could easily calculate any of the steps for you when you picked it, if you had your character sheets input in some quick and easy format
As for building it… I know some people have just made up extensions to the D&D system for like Pokémon and things, but I think given that’s one of its main things that 16hues/Stablehand would fundamentally require a different stats system to start with, so I’m not sure it could be effectively done that way
Me: So I have this tentative character called “Steelwing wing 7, 07”, or just Seven. He is loosely inspired by Nash but he is mostly immortal due to a government project, with this internal conflict around patriotism to the Hinotorian state Me: And I was just thinking today about like, the idea in fiction of consciously experiencing the transition through death Me: Maybe seven has a friend who was part of this research and is just this weird transcended being now Me: What’s their name Me: …Six Me: No, eight Me: Maybe there’s also a six out there and they have to track them down Me: But like, six and eight, they’re a force to be reckoned with Me: So six is kinda dreading it you might say Me: Eight, since their transcension, has become all abstracted down to all the concepts that could possibly comprise them across all these Aether locales and is this kinda weird cosmic amalgam Me: So six would hardly dare even say anything bad about them Me: Why is six afraid of seven? Me: Because when seven is minus eight and you find the root of what’s left, making it a square gives a negative result
So the other day I was having a stupid little thought about people having Reflector MBs that could act as mini-Hfenixata. I haven’t talked about Reflectors much cause they haven’t been developed very much but basically they reside in a host and then the host and Reflector sort of “reflect” each other, that is, bring out hidden qualities of each other through their intertwinedness. They’re basically a carryover from my dropped (and in-reboot) Tyrian project, where they were inspired by the shadows in Blue Dragon Ral Grad* (which in turn first appeared in Blue Dragon).
So this will be a short post, maybe I’ll add on to it later. But I just imagine getting a degree in Aluma to be the actual wildest thing
Verity / Aeterna
In Aeterna they have the Sophius academy for Sharps, where many important ‘science’ people get started. What I already had established is it’s kind of like a university but with its own quirks, at the very least the rather obvious one of having a giant Directed attribute mascot in the basement.
Now I like the idea that every student does independent research and a small dissertation before graduating,
The super funny thing about the Stablehand world is that basically nobody has a standing military, many places have militias of sorts in case some weird circumstance requires them but nearly nowhere is there a flat-out army
…Except Hinotoria the purported country of peace which has this huge-ass military, they’re like, ‘it’s not the military, it’s the Flame Guard, they are a national guard with a legitimate peacetime purpose and we would most certainly never use them for coercion‘
No evidence can be found anywhere that they have, but this is the same country that proudly claims to have publicly burned an infamous leaker to death. So.
I was just thinking about how some palaeontology fans refer to intentionally inaccurate dinosaurs as “awesomebro” and then
I just kinda imagined this group of punkish people with terrorlizards stylishly soliciting you to “come join the awesome brotherhood” in the tone you’d say “come to the dark side”
I think that’s kind of a great and amusing name and also concept so I’m kinda thinking about adding it to Stablehand because I know they’d get into so many great shenanigans. The name sounds like some kind of secret society freemasons shit and I imagine people talking about them with a weird amount of respect while in the actual group they are just a bunch of losers who pull weird performance art to see what they can accomplish kinda.
So Stablehand just got fucking terrifying today …I’m joking.
But once again, I just made up something that was such a concept it scared me
So, I’ve sort of been messing around with the idea of “Soul”, as an opposite… force? I guess? to Void. Void is the main supernatural/Weird thing that affects Stablehand’s planet. Because Void permeates the universe of Aluma, people can use the magic-like “cirque” to manipulate their environment and make cool technologies, travel to and from the Aether that Void comes from, and transform themselves into cyborg-like technotranscendents or furry-like biotranscendents.
