So today I was thinking about Usmana, the destroyed “Spanish lion kingdom”, and how I was kind of turning aspects of it into my SF tribute by playing with what exactly ‘martial art’ means, and what I can do with a lion character in Stablehand what with lions being This Whole Thing in the worldbuilding. I’ll post about that later.
What that got me thinking about is what kind of weaponry Aluma uses in general.
I think that generally, people don’t really use firearms a lot. They’re a thing, but they’re considered kind of primitive since cirque can often be so effective against them.
My new image of it is that maybe there’s literally like a little world in there. A sort of small world, kinda fuzzy beyond its boundaries, but it’s there.
There’s like this meeting room in there where she and her characters can meet to discuss strategies, and these rooms each of the characters can pass time/sleep in if she needs to put them away for safekeeping. It’s kind of like an oddly thorough explanation of the RPG trope where party people clown-car into the main character to make the screen less cluttered :p
All the areas in Ariana’s flowspace world are mainly given details by her characters;
“Umao” is from umay/homaio, the somewhat griffin-like bird of Turkic/Persian mythology. I was looking for a traditional mythology about griffins beyond the heraldic use that I might find a name in and it was kinda hard to find one but then I remembered about those and it’s a reasonably good fit.
I got like four post ideas in the shower and had to squash them all together whoops
Spiriters originally were an Aeterna thing. They were just minor inland thieves. Then Sengra pirates came in and “stole” their faerie friends, displacing them in Ssairetta and expanding out into the ocean. From that point on Sirriparn went from minor boring unknown petty thieves to ridiculous truck-hijacking maniacs
It may be that Ssairetta’s weird habit of jumbling syllables in words (Ssiatterra? → Ssairetta, spiriter → sirripar) originally came from Sengra mangling Aeterna language because they didn’t care,
Finally, the flarefowl! This should have happened much, much sooner given how important these guys are supposed to be, but it’s better late than never, I guess.
The flarefowl or hwnzj is Hinotoria’s national bird, from which the country gets its name. It’s known for an exceptionally beautiful, elaborate, and varied song, but it only sings these songs at any length in places it feels more or less completely safe. As such, the Hinotorians regard it as a symbol of deep, fundamental harmony, and portray it in stories as being common in times when civilisation is running smoothly and not appearing (or only speaking brief,
The most urban main place right now is probably Zefír (Fantasy + Unity). It’s literally a glassy sky city built where there was nothing, so there’s like no natural anything. I saw them as having small artificial green spaces that were like flowerbeds but honestly I’m not sure now how well plants would do at their altitude or what kind. (On a sidenote I need to rename Zefír, now that I actually know what its leadership is like I can’t see them naming it that. :p It needs to be something funky and newagey like Unitopia or Trancescendenta, though less stupid-sounding than either of those.)
Ok, this is kind of a big one. We’re talking practically two months, so there’s a lot of stuff that happened in that time.
A bunch of this stuff is also kind of both scraps and good stuff at the same time, too, so I’ll make separate posts to further explain things where that applies.
My friends and I had for a short while had a patchwork roleplay over Skype, which I made a number of doodles for. Anyway, this was one in which I drew two different forms Yanha assumed in the roleplay.
First design for Ariana as made with the selfy generator (see this post for Lance, Kate, Kris, and white!JF).
The scarf should be light golden brown but since it and the shirt were one item, ‘tacky red it is!’. :p
I also decided while making this she would have an inexplicable fondness for silly-looking slacks. Plaid, polka-dot, spirals, stars… anything flamboyant and silly.
Also, she’s a slightly different ethnicity from Nassak and JF, who are Hinotorian. It might be the one from this place near Hinotoria I’ve had a vague concept for and was tentatively calling Tulmashania.
(I’ve been thinking about it and I think Tulmashania may end up butting out my ideas for “Volitia” while also kind of absorbing part of them. How funny would it be to have this place that’s like, from a sort of Mongol-type nomadic tradition but then they wiped out this really Western, European sort of a place and then just started acting like they knew their culture perfectly and yup, we are so totally the Spanish lion kingdom over here look at us we are so cool. But to everyone else they just come off as weird because they don’t get it, and like, the only way they can get anywhere is still just taking places over so they kind of aren’t making any progress at least as far as spreading their culture and ideas and are kind of jealous of Hinotoria for being so good at that compared to them.)
