So, I’d been intrigued by the idea of Steven having the diamond grunts and Lapis instead of the Crystal Gems, or more precisely, what it would actually mean for the story, and I drew one of my famous Takumi doodle-storyboard-comics about it. I’ve drawn said things about three times before, and this is the first time I think I actually made a kind of good one.
I totally think that while Gems wouldn’t understand “parenting” or “raising” they’d be perfectly familiar with “training”, and, well, you put things in terms of what you know. :p
I apparently love drawing Jasper being horrible to people.
here’s the lead-up I didn’t get to draw.
Jasper: Oh, don’t worry.
If they aren’t dead,
we’ll find them and KILL THEM.
I just kinda decided in the back of my mind while drawing that Jasper considers it her obligation to shut down bullshit, Peridot is that person who brings up ‘the rules’ in a shaky voice and then uses them as an excuse to be a butt, and Lapis is the most calm and mature of the group who tends to be the best at handling Steven (not that the other two aren’t friendly with him, they just don’t handle some situations well).
“64z” was supposed to evoke “kinda like 7z but better”. :p
It didn’t come through as clearly as I’d thought when drawing it but it was supposed to be like, Steven is the one person Jasper would immediately feel bad about hurting and want to make it up to, however, in an atmosphere of everyone blaming her she can’t apologise to the team because what do they want from her, do they want her to say ‘I’m horrible and I suck’? She doesn’t have the emotional energy to put herself down nor want to give them that satisfaction so she just says nothing. When Steven apologises instead she’s like, goddammit, don’t remind me of what an ass I am by apologising to me when I don’t deserve it.
Upgrades (part 2)
finally, you get to see the rest of this one from my restored hard drive.
I like how with my “this would be frustrating but funny” idea of Peridot being super difficult when “downgraded” I actually came surprisingly close to the personality she later got on the show… way before there was any hint Peridot was going to end up reluctantly living with the CG.
There was a little more filler in this one for pacing but it didn’t get drawn and wasn’t that good without drawings so this might as well be called complete.
(If it’s not clear, it was supposed to be implied that Peridot had the collar around her neck because Jasper snapped her neck. I kinda patterned the whole design around the stylised “scar” zigzag which wraps around her neck and which the collar comes out of.)
This was supposed to begin with Jasper grabbing the phone and, well, saying this:
HELLO THIS IS JASPER OF THE STEVEN QUARTZ SUPERVISION TEAM. STEVEN DOES NOT HAVE A “MOM”, HE HAS A HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEAM OF EXPERTS AND WE RESENT THE IMPLICATION THAT WE’RE JUST ONE ORDINARY HUMAN AND ALSO THAT YOU WOULD HAVE THE INSOLENCE TO CALL US A “MOM”. IF YOU WANT TO SPEAK TO US, WE DEMAND TO BE ADDRESSED AS “YES MA’AM”. THANK YOU AND GOODBYE.
…”Mom” IS an insult, right?
