The Apple Tree

My grandmother was heading out toward the deck, and told me “Would you like to know how to watch the violets? Okay, I’ll show you how to watch the violets.” She then proceeded to lead me outside onto the deck, where there was a hanging basket overflowing with foliage and carnation-like flowers that came in red, white and blue all on the same plant; somehow I assumed that those must be the so-called “violets”.

However, those sordid, thieving violets that you can’t trust alone were apparently not very important to her, because the focus soon shifted to a magnificent potted apple tree on the deck.
